The Holy Grail Hockey Mask Of The Friday The 13th Franchise
The large fanbase of Friday the 13th is always eager to learn more about the film series including the people that made the movies and the props that were used during production. The one item that is looked upon as the "holy grail" of props from both casual fans and prop collectors is the hockey mask used in three Friday the 13th films!
It is indeed rare that any one prop is passed from one sequel in a series to another. In this case, that rarity is magnified by the iconic nature of the prop. There is one screen-used hockey mask that makes an appearance in not one, not two, but three Friday the 13th films! The mask in this case use to belong to Hollywood stuntman and film legend, Dick Warlock.
Yes, it is indeed that Dick Warlock. The same man that played Michael Myers in the 1981 film Halloween 2. Dick did stuntwork later on for Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and that is where he acquired the hockey mask as that was the last stop for the now infamous hockey mask. Mr. Warlock has since sold the mask to a fan in 2012. To find out how the mask found its way into Mr. Warlocks hands, we will retrace the events leading up to his acquisition.
There are two masks seen onscreen in Friday the 13th Part 3. One mask commonly known as the “hero”, which is seen through most of the film, and the other hockey mask known as the“stunt” mask seen during the axe chop to Jason's head at the end of the film. This "stunt" mask is also used in the scene where Jason picks up Chili after stabbing her with the hot poker.
Tom Savini got a hold of the beaten and weathered "stunt" mask from Friday the 13th Part 3 and that hockey mask was used during the entire filming of Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter. That very same "stunt" mask, which was used for stunt work in Part 3 as well as the entire filming of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, was then passed on to the production of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning and used during some of Tommy's hallucination scenes.
So, there is a condensed but thorough account of how one hockey mask made it into the production of three Friday the 13th films. It is very rare that any of the hockey masks still exist from the original films, but to have one that was in three films is undeniably the holy grail of Friday the 13th prop collecting!
