The Tale Of Two Shrines: Discovering Mrs. Voorhees Head
After the release of Friday The 13th 2009, fans were beginning to draw comparisons between elements of the new film with certain plot points from the original four films in the franchise. One of the biggest parts of the mythos of Friday the 13th was Jason's connection to his demented mother and fans debate today if this connection was truly upheld in the newer film.
Did the filmmakers of the 2009 film keep certain key elements of the Friday the 13th films intact? That will always be up for debate. However, one scene in particular has divided fans and that is the discovery of Mrs. Voorhees' shrine in the updated film. Since the climactic discovery of the shrine of Mrs. Voorhees in Friday The 13th Part 2 was so instrumental in conveying the driving force of Jason Voorhees, many people were curious to see if the effect of discovering the mummified head of Jason’s mother in the new 2009 film would hold the same effect with today’s audience. Sadly, the film failed to capture the magic that the original discovery brought forth in 1981′s Friday The 13th Part 2.
In the 1981 film, an actual shrine display was created by Jason to memorialize his mother in a respectful manner in her own room. The shrine was completed in the middle of the room with a table and decorative bodies. However, in the 2009 film, Jason simply shoved his mother’s head into a hole in the wall of the bathroom? Not quite the respectful showing of a son who is mourning the loss of his mother. The entire scene of Whitney and her boyfriend finding the deceased Mrs. Voorhees’ head seemed rushed and lacked real tension, however the discovery did offer another quick homage into the modern retelling of Jason Voorhees.
It would be interesting to watch Friday The 13th 2009 without ever seeing the 1981 film and find out if the discovery of Mrs. Voorhees' head in the bathroom would prove to be more effective without having a benchmark to judge it against?
