Ranking The Franchise: Top 3 Best Death Scenes In 'Jason X'
Our Ranking The Franchise series continues today as we have decided to put together our Top 3 Best death scenes in Jason X! This was actually a hard list to put together as there are a number of memorable death scenes in this film. Our readers may or may not agree with our rankings, but the tenth film in the franchise contains a number of great death scenes that could be ranked higher than what we have listed below.
3. Azrael Only Dies Twice
Although Friday The 13th purists despise the entire concept of Jason X, there is no denying the film has an element of fun to it that had not been experienced for some time in the franchise. Putting Jason on a space ship allowed the character a chance to get more creative with the death scenes, and in one bizarre moment, kill two characters twice. For our number three death scene, it may be a bloodless kill, but it's Azrael's second death that truly leaves a mark, or dent with fans.
As Azrael and Dallas (writer Todd Farmer) are playing a virtual reality game hunting a weird creature, Jason Voorhees enters the game. Jason believes Azrael, Dallas and the creature are real and proceeds to slice the creature in half. While Azrael and Dallas talk jokingly about Jason, thinking he is part of the game, Jason slices Azrael in half with his machete and cuts Dallas' head off. Of course, they have not really died as they are in a game, so Dallas shuts down the VR game in frustration. As the pair of gamers take their VR helmets off, they notice Jason is not part of the game and very real. Suddenly, Jason grabs Azrael, picks him up like a rag doll and slams Azrael into his knee, breaking his back.
As mentioned before, there is no blood for the death, but it's a humorous scene that takes a unique high angle shot of Azrael having his back broken.
2. The Vancouver Screw Job
No really, he does get screwed, just not in the way he would truly want. One of the more brilliant scenes in the film (for some fans it is the best) is when the Marines on board the Grendel are made aware of Jason Voorhees lurking about the ship and are dispatched to search and destroy him. What transpires is one massive stalk and slash scene in Jason X and it gives the audience some spectacular kills. One such death that stands out is that of Condor's encounter with Jason. For wrestling fans, it could be known as the Vancouver screw job.
As the Marines enter into the cargo bay of the Grendel, Condor gets himself to an elevated position to survey the area and let his fellow Marines know if he can spot Jason before they do. Of course, Jason is a smart guy and realizes that Condor would probably be watching from above and decides to visit him. Condor begins to fight Jason, but he is knocked over the side and promptly falls onto a large mining drill. His body slides slowly down the drill in a circular motion.
Visually, it's a great gory death that is part of an overall awesome scene.
1. Adrienne Gets Smashed In Space
We all know that it is getting increasingly more difficult as the years pass to create that perfect kill that will always be remembered by fans. By the time Jason X came along, it seemed damned near impossible that a tenth film in any franchise would be able to deliver one of the most memorable moments ever, but that is what our number one death scene in Jason X did.
Once Jason Voorhees' frozen body is brought on board the Grendel after being taken out of cryo stasus on Earth, he is put into an observation room for testing. Everyone believes he is dead, but as the students on the ship examine him, Jason begins to thaw. While Adrienne, alone, is viewing samples in a microscope, Jason suddenly awakens and sits up on the examining table. He peers over at Adrienne while her back is to him and plans his next action. Adrienne, sensing something is wrong, turns to look back at Jason and realizes he is gone from the table. Suddenly, Jason grabs her and the two begin to struggle. She is thrown up against the wall and eventually, Jason pushes her head into a basin of liquid nitrogen. Her entire head immediately freezes in the liquid. Jason pulls her head out of the basin and proceeds to slam it against the counter. Adrienne's face shatters into numerous little pieces and then Jason discards her body.
Her death is truly one of those "Wow" moments in the franchise and showed that Jason would be brutal as ever in his romp in space.
There are many fan favorite death scenes within the film, but these three stand out to us. What are your favorites and how does out list compare to yours?
